| Q&As about Work Experience |
<<Back |
What is work experience?
- it is a placement for one or two weeks with a local company
- usually students aged between 14 and 16 do it
- it is part of the school curriculum – so it is done in term time
Why do it?
Lots of reasons:
- so you can see how the work differs from school; how people
work together, how they get things done
- it will help you to think about your future plans
- you will see how the skills you have learnt at school are used in work
- you may learn new skills
- to see for yourself what different jobs are like
- it may help you to make decisions about your future – can you see yourself
in a setting like this, doing similar things?
- a chance to find out about local organisations and what people do locally
- when you apply for any job or a course, your work experience will look great
on your CV. For some work areas your experience may help you get an
interview – especially in childcare, teaching, health care and work with
animals
FAQs about work experience

making sure you try out lots of things. |

Ring the company and school if you are really too ill to go in. Your school will
give you a pack with details about things like this – read it carefully. |

I can’t do the job I want – do I still have to go? |
Work experience is designed to let you see the ‘world of work’ – it is not about
job sampling. This means it’s about letting you see how you cope in a new
place, with new people – mainly adults so you can learn to adapt to the
workplace… so yes you should go! |
| |
|
I’ve got a Saturday job – do I still need to go? |
Part-time jobs are great, but the range of jobs is small and you won’t be able to
get a Saturday job for lots of areas of work. |
| |
|
What if I mess around? |
You may be sent back to school. Your employer will be asked to comment on
your behaviour, plus you will usually have a visit from school. Work Experience
- a great opportunity – USE IT WELL! |
| |
|
Can a boy try out work experience in care? |
Yes! Work experience is a great opportunity for both boys and girls to try out
non-traditional work areas. |
People you may meet on work experience:
- A Supervisor or Manager will be responsible for you and your work. They will
help you sort out any problems you have.
- A Training Officer who is responsible for training and development in the
company.
- The Personnel or Human Resources Manager is responsible for things such
as health and safety, pay, pensions, tax, working conditions, legal rights and
discipline.
Make sure you know who to contact if you are ill or unable to attend.
More things to think about while you are on work experience...
.. Your school will help you to prepare for work experience. You will be
provided with a diary to fill in during your placement.
.. Stay safe – listen carefully to any training or advice you are given whilst on
work experience. Everyone in work has some responsibility for health and
safety, including you!
.. Always ask if you are unsure of things.
.. Arrive on time – carefully check all your travel arrangements.
.. Wear suitable clothing – you will usually be told what type of clothing is
acceptable.
.. Break and meal arrangements – do you need to take your own or is there a
canteen?
.. It will be tiring – so don’t plan a hectic social life during work experience.
Ask your school’s Work Experience Co-ordinator for more information about
your work experience.
