"We have been involved in work experience for some years and each year we take students on placement from local schools in our motor vehicle body repairs and re-sprays workshop.
Usually the students come for an interview first - this gives us both the chance to see if it’s what they want to do.
They have a quick look around and before they leave, are told who to report to on their first day. We think that all students should have the opportunity to experience a work placement - preferably for two weeks as one week is not long enough. It makes them understand what work is like, it gives them a chance to mix with older people, learn to follow instructions, realise the importance of taking responsibility and of working as a team.
We have had students in the past who were not very interested in the work and made no effort at all, so they are told to report back to school. Last year we had two excellent students who were invited to get back in touch with us when they leave school if they want to pursue an apprenticeship. Occasionally we also offer some holiday and part-time work".
