More about the main jobs and careers entered at 16:

  • 256 Calderdale Y11 pupils went into full-time employment or training.
  • including 16 pupils who went on to work sampling training.
  • Also included in 'Other' are pupils going into other sectors in small numbers (one or two people only):

  • 1% went into manufacturing and production
  • 0.4% went into sales, retail and customer service
  • 1% went into warehouse, driving and transport
  • We do not know what a further 153 of these Y11 pupils went on to do, only that they are in work or training of some kind - these make up part of the 63% 'Other'.

What does this mean for me after Y11:

  • Employers recruit most apprentices at age 16 to 18 because they get full Government funding in most cases, for training for 16 to 18 year olds. There is reduced funding for 19 to 24 year old apprentices. After 24 there is no apprenticeship funding, though there may be funding under adult training in certain situations
  • Some jobs usually only recruit via Apprenticeships for example, textiles, engineering, hairdressing or you can do a full-time course - in some sectors such as engineering, if you choose to go to college you will then probably have to go on to higher education to have a good chance of getting a job
  • Employed Apprenticeships pay the minimum pay of £2.50 an hour but many employers pay a lot more than this and they lead to nationally recognised qualifications - NVQs
  • At 16 or 17 you may be entitled to time off for study or training (TFST)
  • Get OrganisedMany jobs and apprenticeships want young people with GCSEs grades A* to C and will expect you to also take a selection test - find out more in Get Organised available in Publications or ask your PA

If you decide to look for a job after Y11:

  • Look for an apprenticeship or a job with training - see the Calderdale Apprenticeship graph for more information on the labour market.
  • Apply early - your PA will tell you the best time.
  • Make sure you prepare well - get your CV ready, find out about the companies and training providers to which you wish to apply, give thought to the interview... Good luck!
