More about the main jobs and careers entered at 18:

  • 272 Kirklees Y13 students went into full-time employment or training.
  • 53.5% 'Other' is made up of students going into other sectors in small numbers (one or two people only):

e.g.

  • 1% went into computing and IT
  • 1% went into farming, gardening and animal care
  • 1% went into the travel and tourism
  • 0.5% went into the Armed Forces
  • 0.5% went into design, arts and crafts
  • 0.5% went into healthcare
  • 0.5% went into motor vehicle work
  • 0.5% went into textiles and sewing
  • Also included in 'Other' are 132 students for whom we do not have details of their employment.

What does this mean for me after Y13:

  • The number of students getting a job with training in each sector is usually fewer than after Year 11. Employers tend to recruit more new entrants after GCSEs or after a degree, foundation degree or equivalent.
  • Some jobs are only open to people over 18. These jobs may legally require someone who is an adult or involve the safety of others, for example trainee security guard, trainee publican, classroom assistant, leisure assistant.
  • Employers may want people over 18 because they have A levels or equivalent qualifications, particularly when the training may take several years, for example, trainee auditor, trainee accountant, trainee webmaster, trainee quantity surveyor, trainee logistics (transport) planner.
  • Employers recruit most apprentices at age 16 to 18 because they get full Government funding in most cases, for training for 16 to 18 year olds. There is reduced funding for 19 to 24 year old apprentices. After 24 there is no apprenticeship funding, though there may be funding under adult training in certain situations.

If you decide to look for a job after Y13:

  • You need to be prepared to look for work within daily travel distance, not just in your own town, or even just in Kirklees.
  • Make sure you prepare well - get your CV ready, find out about the companies to which you wish to apply, give thought to the interview... Good luck!
