Year 10

<<Back

In many ways, Year 10 is a fresh start for students as they begin the exam courses they will follow through to the end of Year 11. For a lot of students this means meeting new teachers and making different friends as they work together in new groups.

They will be expected to do course work, often over a number of weeks, which may also be new to them. Some students will enjoy this and others will take time to settle.

guide for Parents front coverYear 10 students often get the opportunity to go on a one or two week work experience placement. Most students really enjoy this chance to sample the world of work and get a lot out of it. Find out the facts and how you can help prepare your son or daughter in our work experience guide for parents and carers (186kb Adobe Acrobat)

Help on offer:

  • access to a Personal Adviser in school, individually or in groups
  • Personal Advisers offer drop-in sessions in school for students, usually over breaks and lunchtimes
  • Personal Advisers attend Parents Evenings (at the request of the school)
  • work experience placements (arranged with the school)
  • you can call into our local Centres in Dewsbury, Halifax or Huddersfield for help and advice too.

You can help by:

  • discussing how studies are going in school; how are they settling in to new ways of working?
  • keeping in touch with school staff to stay up to date with their progress and work with staff to ensure you are aware of the best way to help and give encouragement!
  • encouraging them to study hard and attend school regularly; with better GCSE results it is easier to get a job. Employers look for reliable workers who can be trusted to turn up for work – attending school regularly shows they will attend work regularly too.
  • listening to their thoughts about work experience and encourage them to be positive and realistic. If they have a particular career area in mind it is possible for students or parents to contact employers or use their own contacts and organise the work experience – having it checked for health and safety by C+K Careers. Refer to the school Work Experience Co-ordinator or Personal Adviser for more help with this.
