How We can help:

Young people looking at careers informationOur Personal Advisers (PAs) help throughout your son or daughter's education. Information and advice on jobs/careers, learning and training will be made available for parents of Y9 students through to Y13. If required, some of our information can be produced for you and your son or daughter in Braille or large print format.

Help for Young People with Disabilities or Special Needs briefly explains what we offer in Calderdale (626kb Adobe Acrobat PDF) and in Kirklees (750kb Adobe Acrobat PDF), for example:

Y8 & 9

PAs can arrange to see parents of students in Y8 onwards to discuss any worries about options post 16.

If your child has learning difficulties and/or disabilities it is possible for them to receive help up to the age of 25.

PAs attend Transition Reviews in Y9, options evenings and parents evenings to offer help and support. A Transition Review helps plan your son or daughter's move into adult life.

DirectionsParents of all Y9 students with a statement will be contacted by letter explaining the role of a Connexions PA, the purpose of the Transition Review, specialist further education colleges and the Disabled Students Allowance.

Calderdale & Kirklees Careers produces a workbook for schools to use called Directions: career choices at 13-14 available in Publications

We also produce Getting Started in Careers available in Publications outlining subject and courseGetting Started in Careers choice to parents and carers of Year 9 students

Y11

PAs work with groups of students to discuss their options and meet students individually, usually more than once during the year. The PA also attends the Y11 Annual Review.

Students will have their needs assessed by a PA before leaving school.

If there are exceptional circumstances, PAs can advise on and refer students with special needs to specialist colleges outside the area, if local provision is unable to meet their needs.

Students in mainstream schools with learning difficulties and disabilities may be referred to a specialist PA if it is felt they need additional support.

Where appropriate, we deliver Get Organised, Post 16 Options in Calderdale or the Get Ahead (foundation level) booklet to schools for students - all are available in Publications. They explain post-16 options available locally
