"We are a small company carrying out plumbing and heating work in domestic, commercial, industrial and local authority premises. We have a long serving workforce but no apprentices.
Work experience offers us an opportunity to give something to young people locally. Students get an insight into working life, as well as the opportunity to visit sites and become involved in the work we do.
Students are teamed with a well experienced technician who introduces them to tasks, ranging from clearing blockages to more technically demanding work, such as heating system installation. When students are on placement, I explain to them the importance of good customer service and emphasise the need to be presentable, polite, friendly and professional.
While the company has not in the past been in a position to offer apprenticeships, this is something we hope to do. If this happens, it's likely work experience will also be used as a means of assessing candidates' suitability for working in our industry".
